kabul, afghanistan with the latest on the situation there, what can you tell us? >> the afghan authorities raised the death tollto 12 people. eight of those dead was south africa and russia employees. they were employees at 6 mornino the kabul airport and believed to be workers for the charter solutions company and provides diplomatic air support for afghanistan as they move around the country. 6:00 in the morning, a vehicle fulled of explosives ran into the minibus . the shocking thing, taliban said it was a 22 year old female who was the homicide suicide bomber. this is a rare thing in afghanistan. i can only remember one or two time in afghanistan where a female was the attacker. but as i said, 12 people are dead and death tollcould be raised as other afghans were

injured outside of the area. the death tollis symbolic of afghanistan, a lot of unrest as a result of that anti-islamic film. the u.s. military changed its stance on joint patrols with afghans . 51 international troops are killed this year because of insider attacks when the afghans turned their weapons on them. and u.s. military said it was a shoulder to shoulder operation fighting the taliban between the united states and afghan government. this is a limited operation and an arm's length and changes the overall strategy. it is very tough to mentor them and raises questions about the overall strategy here in afghanistan going forward and the unrest in the muslim world continues. we had violent protest here in kabul and in pakistan.

country that we say is our ally and our moderate that got elected that we consider somebody reliable, he stays planned. there's a report out there that three days prior we got a heads up. look out, they're coming after you on 9-11. tuesday. and then when senator mccain came forward on our show and every other show and said hey listen, we know it was a planned attack, they had rpg and shoulder fired missiles, jen dismissed it as well, this is the political season and he's a big romney supporter. >> gretchen: jen fackey is an obama traveling spokesperson for the campaign, just to make sure we know who she is. the bottom line is you asked brian rhetorically why would they not say that it may have been -- the advantage is completely one 50 days away from the election about not wanting to have a terrorist attack on your resume as you're touting foreign policy moving towards an

election. they're claiming that their sources on the ground are saying that it wasn't planned. and if you go back and look at the susan rice interview who is the u.s. ambassador to the united nations, she went on every single sunday talk show and basically said the same thing as she moved from hoe to show. but you have to wonder what are the real things that are going on there? charles krauthammer last night had his speculation as well as brit hume. >> i think they are totally in meltdown at the state department. why is she engaging in disquisition with a free speech with the mob? this is a nation when somebody puts a crucifix in a bot of -- bottle of urine, it ends up in a museum. perhaps we ought to make an exception? this is absurd. >> it's enough o make the american voter say what kind of policy is it and what kind of successes is it when we have an ambassador murdered, particularly one who was a

friend of the libyan uprising? and that, i think, is shocking and distressing to americans and when they hear the administration saying, as did as recently as yesterday, and some respects still today that this was really the result of an ugly, crude little movie trailer not even a movie trailer, that some islamic activists used to try to foment trouble in the middle east, it doesn't compute. >> steve: one other thing, a couple days ago, the interim president of libya said it looked like al-qaeda was involved in this hit. that's problematic for the white house because if it's al-qaeda, wait a minute, the president has already claimed that what happened in libya was a big victory in that episode where we led from the back. so if it's al-qaeda, that means they're still out there, which means you take that from the victory column for foreign affairs. >> brian: the c.i.a. is on record saying the situation on

the ground, libya is deteriorating and security official inside libya said three days ago we gave you a heads up. the actual assault itself, according to katherine herrage, had two phases. the first phase killed after the ambassador, then the support personnel. >> gretchen: let's switch topics and talk about the domestic election coming up in 50 days from now. mitt romney was caught on a videotape from several months ago at a closed fund-raiser where he was talking about the 47% of the american people that he believes will automatically vote for president obama. listen to this carefully. we put up some kyron for you because it's hard to hear so you can read along with it and we'll discuss it.

>> brian: i would love for that to be a message for any candidate on the stump because if you talk about making tough decisions from here on in, talk about entitlements for every one dollar in tax money, we owe 3, we'll have to make really tough decisions. if people in their lives aren't going to do everything they can to understand that we can't afford to pay housing issues health care, food examine -- and everything else for people, it's not possible, why can't a leader put that forward? >> steve: when you look at what mitt romney just said,

politically, what's the matter with it? >> gretchen: the last two lines they're going to jump on. it's not the ideological assessment he's given. >> steve: he has said these exact same things many, many times. but for him to say at the end, my job is not to worry about those people, politically he's right. he can't count on them. he can't worry about them showing up to the polls come the first tuesday in november. >> gretchen: right. but those are the two lines that people will pounce on to say he doesn't connect with the middle class and he doesn't get it. that's why he felt it was so important to call this press conference at 10:30 to respond to this video coming out. here is what he said last night. >> it's not elegantly stated, let me put it that way. i'm speaking off the cuff in ponce to a question. but it's a message which i'm going to carry and continue to carry, which is look, the president's approach is attractive to people who are not paying taxes because frankly, my discussion about lowering taxes isn't as attractive to them, and

therefore, i'm not likely to draw them into my campaign as effectively as those in the middle. this is really a discussion about the political process of winning the election and, of course, i want to help all americans, all americans have a bright and prosperous future and i'm convinced that the president's approach has not done that and will not do that. >> steve: when you look at his comments through the prism of politic, remember, he's a politician in front of a group at a fund-raiser in boca a couple months ago, it all makes sense. they're going to try to spin it the other way, but it is all -- >> brian: here is the bad part. he wanted to get a new message to get specific on his programs and now he's got to be defensive about surveillance video at a fund raise that are shouldn't have been allowed. >> gretchen: let's get in what you think about this whole thing. kathy in ohio, so mitt romney got caught being honest with voters and we can't handle it? that's why i used to be a democrat. i grew up. give me a break. >> steve: david in florida sakes i'm glad mitt romney stood by his comments. in fact, i wish he had taken it

that's what we should have had. and there have been about four to five previous attacks on the embassy consulate there is in libya which led to us knowing exactly what the president interim president of lynn i can't said, is that this was al-qaeda-based terrorist organization, which is what you have there in benghazi. >> steve: then you've got the interim libyan president going on tv saying it was preplanned. these people from out of town, i think it's al-qaeda. then people from the administration came out and said, i believe it was yesterday, said yeah, he's wrong because he doesn't have the same sources of intelligence that we do. i don't get that. he's there! >> i would trust the man on the ground, absolutely. you have to trust the guy on the ground. steve, this is very important for the obama administration because first and foremost, they misread the tea leaves. they misread this whole arab spring. they did not understand you have to fill a void of leadership in those countries. exact same thing when the shah of iran was deposed and you got the ayatollahs ayatollahs and hd

hamas. so they can not all of a sudden have their failed policies, foreign policies really be seen as the reason why this has occurred. >> steve: i want to ask but something that mitt romney was caught on tape saying down there in boca a couple of months ago that. is essentially that 47% of the country not going to vote for him because they're on the dole. what did you think of that comment, because the obama side is blowing it up like look, he doesn't care about half the country. >> i think everyone should take the time to read the book "democracy in america" that was written in 18 30s and i just happened to bring that quote in. a democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. it can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largeese from the public treasury. from that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always

was watching "survivor." what was your input? how did you help make that a hit in. >> well, actually it's way before the show even aired because once it aired, we had everybody in line, jeff, the host, the contestant, we have a great casting department, wonderful producers. it was behind the scenes pre-"survivor," getting -- doing the networking, helping with the creative side of things. >> brian: did you perceive this type of success? did you say, we got something here if because reality was brand-new at that time. >> well, when we were doing eco challenge, which was first aired in 1995, and we did that consecutively for about seven years, i knew mark was on to something. he's an adventurist guy, really smart. he's a great story teller. and that was a hit. that was successful in its own genre. but "survivor," wow, that was just a big surprise. we were really, really happy.

sitting on the beach one day and it was about to air and we saw planes going over with the banner "survivor" premiering tonight. i just looked at mark and i said, wow. i think this is going to be really good. >> brian: you were right. >> steve: yeah. it was really good and a lot of people watched for a very long time. ultimately you write in your book, though, about the marriage didn't work out. you did not survive the marriage as husband examine wife. -- examine wife. -- did she and wife. now you have written the book. why? >> i took my time of the i was approached early on to write something, but as women know going through a breakup, it's painful and hurtful, breaking up the family. i didn't think i was in the right frame of mind to tell my story. but it's one of empowerment. it's inspirational. it's about love. it's about family and it's about coming through adversity and taking the high road. >> brian: it's interesting, you have two kids and you are

friends now. but then you realized, i had a lot to do with it, but you don't think about a financial agreement because you're married. do you regret that or do you recommend that to other people if you're in the creative realm? >> that's a good point. i don't really regret anything. i think i'm okay and i try to live for the moment and right now i have two beautiful kids, i'm healthy, i'm happy. i'm moving on. however, with the business side of it, yeah. looking at it in hindsight, absolutely. maybe i would have done it a little differently. >> steve: i'm sure you know your ex hurricanes mark burnett, denies your involvement with "survivor." he told the hollywood reporter if she did so much r are all her new shows? >> i know that, kind of hurts a little bit. first of all, i have a cancer foundation. my mother passed away from esophageal cancer. i've been working on that. i have a social networking site

let's get to it. >> brian: let's save the country and talk about the country that needs saving. that's libya. i cannot believe this administration is sticking to the phrase, it was a spontaneous, uncoordinated attack when everybody, including the president and the c.i.a. and everybody else in libya says this was coordinated and scripted and it was on 9-11. >> yeah. it was just happened to be spontaneous, even though within 36 hours after the attack, we had libyan officials and other intelligence experts on the ground saying that both 9-11 and the film used as a pretext enabled these attackers to be much more lethal in how they entered that compound. but that this was planned. this was in response, most likely to that drone strike on the libyan al-qaeda figure, about ten days earlier and this is what they're known to do. when you take out one of theirs, they'll come back and troy to make a statement. >> steve: one of the problem, laura, is according to the interim libyan president, he

thinks there could be a connection to al-qaeda and if it is al-qaeda, then that looks bad for president obama because libya was in the victory column. we took care of things in that part of the country. >> there is a rule of thumb with it comes to foreign affairs or economic issues, rule of thumb in this administration is, it's not our fault. it's either the european debt crisis or it's george bush or it's the tea party -- >> steve: but they can't say it's al-qaeda's fault because that would be politically unhelpful. >> of course so. it's what's going to dove tail into our next topic because you can't actually discuss serious issues today in the campaign. you have to move on to secretly recorded videos or mitt romney said this on a late night show. meanwhile, we have the middle east in flames. we have our economy in an absolute disaster with the fiscal cliff looming, and we want to talk about all these other issues. so of course, it's all deflect

mother jones, the magazine no one reads, and in it is mitt romney talking at a private fund-raiser. listen to the message and i want your analysis. >> 47% of the people who vote for the president, there are 47% who are with him, who depend upon government who are victims who previous government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe they're entitled to health care, to food, housing, to you name it. entitlement. government should give it to them. they will vote for this president no matter what. >> steve: what did he say that's wrong? >> i mean, the percentage might be off by one or it percentage points, depending how you formulate it. but the bottom line, and i tweeted this late last night, the bottom line is mitt romney speak not guilty a money raiser about -- fund-raiser about the challenges that a republican faces in this presidential race, not all that unlike what political pundits, many hyper ventilating today, have said, that there is a small slice of

the electorate that is undecided. that's basically what he's saying there. the idea you're declaring this, the race is over! mitt romney doesn't care about people! meanwhile, we have a president of the united states whose policies have undermined the 47%! and the media is like, oh, well, he's with jz this week. he's with beyonce. michelle is on with rachel ray yesterday. isn't this great? the policies of this president have hurt the 47%. mitt romney's merely talking about the political challenges that he faces, period. >> gretchen: i think for the first 50 seconds of that sound bite, yes, exactly, i agree with you. but here is going to be the problem about what they're going to make hay about, it's the last two lines. it's not his math. it's going to be this quote, so my job is not to worry about those people. i'll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility for their lives. >> so he has to hammer home the fact in successsive press events, he has to hammer home

the fact that my policies, what i'm going to do when i'm president, not what i'm going to say, not like mr. hope examine change, what i'm going to do is -- don't resent rich people, become a rich person by having opportunity and an economy that's growing. i'm going to do those things. they're going to focus on these words and he said this -- i'm going to do the things that are going to help you. you might not support me now, but let me tell you something, when you see what i'm going to do in this white house and with my team in place, you're going to come along with us and that will be terrific. i think your point, gretchen, is well taken. that snip pet is going to be used. however, it's incumbent upon mitt romney to further this case that look, his ideas and policies are going to grow this economy. obama says he cares, but he doesn't really. >> gretchen: you seem extra fired up today. >> i am. i'm very pumped up about this. i think it's ridiculous that people are seizing on it and that we're even giving all that much air time to it. >> brian: the only thing governor romney wanted to change his message and get more into

detail about his policy. the message would be interesting if he put it in a speech. if he didn't get caught on camera. but he addressed people and said, i got to make tough decisions and here is what it's going to be. i would love to see that in a message. >> brian, what did we talk about in late june? i was on this set and i believe we were talking about my comments that it's time to get off the jet ski. right? that people were all upset when i said this. oh, how could you say this? he needs a vacation. because i knew that if you didn't go into these conventions and then emerge from the convention with a substantial lead that it would be their opportunity to frame you in the way they are, as they're framing him, they tried to frame him out of touch, he's a richie rich guy, that's what they're trying to do. okay? he needed to be ahead. you can not take two days off of the campaign trail. you have to frame this issue as economic growth and a road map for american renewal with solutions and specifics and remind people of what this man promised and what's befallen

closed because there is still a threat of attack by anti-american protesters. overnight in afghanistan, a female homicide bomber killing at least 12 people with a car bomb. conner powell joins us live from kabul, afghanistan, with the layest on the situation there. good morning. >> good morning. taliban offshoot has claimed credit for this attack. according to afghan officials, vehicle full of explosives rammed into a mini bus on the way to the airport that was full of foreign workers, including eight south african workers killed. in total, 12 were killed. we think that number may be increasing over the next few hours because of the size of the bomb. many of those workers worked for the air charter solutions company, which provides air support and aircraft to u.s. and other diplomatic missions here in afghanistan. it is a strange bombing because the taliban are saying it was a woman who launched this attack. that is a very rare thing. i can only think of one or two other cases in afghanistan's history in recent years where a

woman has been the suicide bomber. because of this sort of environment here in afghanistan, the u.s. military has said that they are going to limit the amount of joint operations between u.s. and afghan troops going forward. the insider attack has been a growing problem in afghanistan. because of the overall situation with the anger over this anti-islamic film, u.s. military says from now on, in the near future, no more joint afghan-u.s. patrols. that's a change. >> gretchen: conner powell live in afghanistan, thanks very much. >> brian: joining us now, former secretary of defense who has done quite a lot for this country, many different jobs. he's also known as the best selling author. his home war "known examine unknown" is going to be now out on paperback, donald rumsfeld, welcome back to "fox & friends." >> thank you very much. >> brian: congratulations on the success of the book. let me bring you to real life and real news and that is the series of attacks on at least 20 embassies around the world. u.s. embassies, all over this

film. does donald rumsfeld believe that this film is the cause of all this unrest? >> it seems to me that calling a baseball a basketball doesn't make it a basketball. and the idea that they can contend that the anger and hostility we see from islamists in these 20-plus locations around the world is a result of a film that nobody's seen i think is naive, if they believe it, and misleading if they don't. >> gretchen: what is it then? >> well, it clearly is a reflection of the fact that in the world there are determined islamists, radical islamists who are hopeful they're able to impose a califate on the world. when you look at what they're doing, the tearing up of american flag, the attacks on western values, it's very clear what they want to do. they want to achieve their goals of imposing their views on the rest of the world.

and to pretend like they did with the fort hood attack, that it was workplace violence, or that this is the result of some sort of film that nobody has seen, it seems to me, is unfortunate and either naive or misleading. >> steve: mr. secretary, what do you make of the administration has really doubled down. a couple of days ago, they sent the ambassador to the united nations, susan rice, and she said look, it was spontaneous. it was all over this movie. examine that's what led to -- and what's led to the murder of our ambassador. and yet intel says there was no demonstration before the ambassador attack. so why is the administration continuing with that narrative, it's all about the movie? >> i think it's hope. i think they're hopeful that they can persuade the american people that that's the case. but the fact of the matter is, it took place on the anniversary of september 11, the attack on the united states 11 years ago,

sure, to a certain extent, there is a copy cat effect where people can see someone do something that they agree with and then they repeat it somewhere else. but the reality is it can't be the film. it has to be something connected to september 11. there is an investigation going on by the house intelligence committee and my impression is chairman rogers has been very measured and thoughtful on this issue and we'll soon know precisely what the facts are and my guess is they'll be quite embarrassing for the administration. >> gretchen: the interesting thing will be whether or not those results are known before election day. because i think that will be the -- that is sort of a line in the sand. let me ask you about this, because many people are saying that if president obama is reelected, that this foreign policy, what many deem to be appeasement, at least in the muslim world, will continue. some of the names being thrown around of possible secretary of state replacements for hillary

clinton are ambassador rice, who we were just speak of, or senator john kerry. what do you make of that? >> well, i think it's probably early and i'm not a part of the obama administration. i wouldn't be in a position to know what they're thinking. but the one thing that's important to remember, it seems to me, is that as da way eisenhower said, you have peace through strength. and weakness is provocative. to the extent the united states of america examine the leadership here -- and the leadership here behaves if a way that reflects weakness, it clearly will encourage and entice people around the world to engage in things that are harmful to our values, harmful to our country and harmful to the american people. and it seems to me that when you blend the foreign policy approach of this administration, it's one of withdrawal examine decline and weakness and you marry that with the mismanagement of our economy, which is now sending out signals

of weakness, i think we simply have to approach it differently. >> brian: mr. secretary, we know that president obama has come forward and said, look how successful i am in my foreign policy. i left iraq. we finished the war in iraq responsibly. do you believe we got out of iraq responsibly? >> the fact that the white house and the state department could not even manage to get a status of forces agreement after the effort that was put into iraq and the fact that they then launched on a pattern of a democratic constitution, i think is most unfortunate. i would say anyone who wants to chalk that up as a success is making a mistake. >> brian: what about afghanistan? >> we have seen what's going on there. it's a terribly difficult situation. and i was concerned about the attacks on our forces by afghan people. apparently the taliban had been

able to infiltrate the security forces to some extent and as a result, it's made it quite dangerous for u.s. forces to operate in close proximity to afghan forces. my guess is what they'll have to do is strengthen their vetting system and until they've sorted that out, they're going to have to probably operate separately rather than jointly. >> steve: mr. secretary, this campaign, the bumper sticker is gm lives and osama bin laden died. that, to many, is their whole foreign policy approach. we got rid of that guy and he's been successful. do you think the foreign policy approach has made sense? >> no, i don't. i think that to the extent we send signals around the world that we're in decline and that we can't manage our financial matters properly and that we're engaged in a process that could end up reducing our defense

budgets by something close to a trillion dollars over the next decade, the signal that goes out is one of weakness, it's a lack of leadership, and a leadership vacuum is going to be filled by others. the others are not going to be people who are going to favor the united states or who are going to favor our values. >> gretchen: all right. donald rumsfeld, the former secretary of defense, of course, his memoir comes out on paperback. hard to believe how fast time goes by. you were just here when the book came out. it's entitled "known and unknown." all proceeds going to veterans charity. great to see you again. have a great day. >> thanks. >> brian: 20 minutes before the top of the hour. >> gretchen: the rest of your headlines. three planes quarantined for 90 minutes at jfk after a call of a possible hijack. according to the port authority, it appeared possible part of a coordinated hoax at airports across the country. at least one of the pilots was left in the dark about what was going on. take a listen. >> okay. we're surrounded by machine

>> gretchen: help us figure out how 12 million jobs will be created if president-elect or romney becomes president. >> the good news is you've actually got a candidate who had a record of creating jobs, both as governor of massachusetts and in the private sector. i think everybody knows 8% unemployment for 43 months now, it's unacceptable, unsustainable. the president tried and his policies failed. what mitt romney said is he's got a five-point plan for creating jobs for the middle class. it involves trade, work force development, debt reduction, focus on small business, and energy. and those are all things that he's laid out in some detail, although everybody always wants more detail that, will help get us back to work. i can tell you, governor of virginia, we're at 5.9% unemployment rate in virginia. but i just see the bureaucracy, the unfunded mandate, attack on the energy industry in virginia, we'd be doing better with a

pro-jobs president like mitt romney. >> brian: if he could ride your coat tail noose virginia, he would be in good shape for the electoral votes. mitt romney told a group at a fund-raiser, 47% of the country basically out of reach because they're getting fully funded from the government, so to speak. they're not taxpayers and won't hear his message. how damagedamaging, if at all, is this that has the governor talking about all this? >> brian, i haven't seen that 30-second tape. but i have seen the four years of the obama record and it's not good when it comes to people being able to have freer and independent lives. i think what the governor is trying to say, and he said he didn't say it right, is what has been reported. but what's trying to say is that the number of people on food stamps and that have to depend on the government because of the lousy obama government, 43 months of 8% is unacceptable and he wants more people to be able

to get back to work, make more taxpayers so we can get ourselves out of this debt by having more people with access to the american dream. so he would say it probably differently today, but it is a significant problem when you have this level of people that don't pay significant amount of taxes because they can't earn a good living. so job creation, economic development through these plans, i think, are exactly the right formula for the country. >> gretchen: it all comes back to job, which is where we started. thanks for your time this morning. >> thanks, gretchen. >> gretchen: right back [ male announcer ] how do you make america's favorite recipes?
